Members Only Post #142 – Boiling Things Down To The “One” Essential Thing

If you could accomplish one thing and one thing only, guaranteed, in your life what would it be? It could be a big thing, but not an impossible thing. For example don’t say “Oh I’d learn how to fly” or I’d “Invent a cure for cancer.” or things of that nature. Not that the latter isn’t possible of course but look at something that you could do “realistically” but at the same time would stretch you too your limits.

So for example becoming a millionaire would be a realistic goal, as would say having a professional fight, or becoming a best selling novelist. By realistic I don’t necessarily mean likely but I mean is possible given enough time and dedication. Obviously different factors such as health and age and the like are going to affect this but think big picture. If you had one giant meaty goal that you could accomplish what would it be?

Have a healthy happy family on a farm with ten kids? Write a book or movie that changes the way people think across an entire culture? Become the best, or at least among them, at your dedicated craft? And so on and so forth. I want you to think about this because it’s important. The one big meat goal. The one goal that you’d accomplish, that’s a big one, if you knew you couldn’t accomplish any others.

What is it?

How To Not Get Lost In The Weeds

Men need goals. They need something they’re striving, working, shooting, and grinding for. Physically, mentally, and spiritually. Because mankind was meant to be in motion, forward motion, and when you don’t have a goal, don’t have something you’re pursuing you end up listless and adrift. You end up all sorts of places you don’t want to go and you start to stagnate like a pond without fresh water. You start to get ate up by bad bacteria and the like. Get a bunch of growths that you don’t want until you become something close to toxic.

We’ve all probably been adrift before and at least have an idea of what this feels like. We get lost in the weeds and before we know it we have no idea how we ended up there and no idea how to get out. We need a guiding light, a lighthouse of sorts to keep us from breaking on the rocks.

So now that I’ve confused you with enough metaphors lets get into the meat of this. Separate from goals we don’t know where we’re going. It’s important to have big meaty goals that really resonate with who we are deep inside. They might change as we move along the path but that’s fine, so long as we’re moving along the path. And knowing your one big goal is so important to having a guiding light to lead you forward through life.

Meaning & Goals

I think every man should have a goal physically, mentally, and spiritually. Right now my physical goals are cut down a weight class. My mental goals is keep reading two nonfiction books a month. And my spiritual goal is to spend at least 24 hours in nature every month. Something that’s hard the busier I get but that I try to keep too. But then there’s the one big goal that unifies and supersedes all the others. The one that helps define and give meaning to your life.

If you can’t think of it or aren’t sure where to start then start with the physical, mental, and spiritual goal. One each, don’t overload yourself. Just pick one goal for physical development, mental development, and spiritual development. These will all echo your overall “big” goal even if you don’t know what it is yet. See if you can see the big picture that connects all three and you’ll be that much closer to knowing what your one big goal is.

Likewise if you’re having trouble coming up with a physical, mental, and spiritual goal then there are two options. One is look at the list I’ve prepared below. Second is think about what your one big goal is and go from there. My one big goal is to give as many men possible the tools they need to live happy and healthy lives, to increase wisdom, courage, and beauty in the world, and the bring things closer to the right workings in the primal cosmic order. That’s my big goal and the reason that I run this site.

The One Big Goal As The North Star

Identification of the one big goal, even if it changes over time, is about the closest thing to a guarantee that you can get to a guarantee that you won’t go astray, or at least too far astray. So that you won’t get lost in the weeds and wonder what happened to your life and your time. To make sure you’re heading somewhere and putting one foot in front of the other making sure that you’re getting closer to the life you want to live each and every day.

And I can’t think of a better use of your time than that.
