How Productivity Can Ruin Your Life

Okay so the title’s definitely a copywriting title but as long as it got your attention and gets you to read I’m fine with that. At first this statement might seem weird considering how often I’m writing about how to be more productive and get more things done in your life. After all it wasn’t that long ago that I wrote an entire article about how writing out my plan for the next day the night before was essentially a life changer.

And it still is and is still something that I do pretty much every night. However with all of that being said there is something else that I want to talk about in regards to productivity and getting things done. Now for the vast majority of people they could use some more productivity in their lives. Most people accomplish very little of the goals that they have for themselves or are improving in any way throughout life.

And that is not how we were made to go throughout life and that is not how one should go throughout life. However with that being said there is also a threat that lies in the other direction. And that is those that get so caught up in getting things done that they forget that actually living life (a good life) is the goal here. They get caught up in being productive when there are more important and bigger things in life.

“You Can Sleep When You’re Dead”…Said The Moron

You see this a lot with the “get money bitches”/”be a hustler” type people and while there is something to be said for hustling and getting your money right, good night that is not what life is all about and if you think so you’re missing out on so damn much. Don’t get me wrong I like Grant Cardone but if you look at many who follow him and are trying to copy a certain lifestyle you can get what I’m talking about.

There’s a time when you have to sit back and think “Alright what exactly am I doing this all for and is this going to fulfill me?”. Now granted we can’t know for sure what will fulfill us and what will not, but at the same time we can start to get an idea. For example making money is great but is that ultimately going to fulfill you? History would say most likely not (but then again only you know you). It’s one thing to have a base covered and its another to think that meaning will come from having that base covered even more.

There is more to life than productivity, there is more to life than achievement, and there is more to life than getting things done (though obviously those are all important things). The big reason to focus on productivity and achievement is so that you can actually live life (real life) and not be in need or end up in trouble because you neglected the basics.

Life Is More Than X

X can be money, power, or a great many other things. And that’s not to say that these things don’t matter or even that they don’t matter greatly, because they often do. Rather it’s just to state a fact, that life is more than these things. Now usually people would go on and on about spiritual stuff or family or this or that at this point and hey if that’s someone’s thing then there’s nothing wrong with that.

But that doesn’t mean it’ll be your thing. Yours could be completely different. And those things can also become substitutes for real life as well and also taken to unhealthy extremes. For example the woman who simply obsesses over her children or the monk who spends all of his time in meditation then dies one days and realize he didn’t do shit with his life. And so on and so forth.

Much of life is about balance. You need to strive and fight but you also need to breath and see the world around you. When you get too caught in any one thing is usually when bad things start to happen (well bad things always happen but I mean preventable bad things). Not to sound cheesy but no one wants to get to the end of their life with their “song still in them”, this is a true statement and one that I really hope you’ll take some time to think about. Beware the cult of productivity.

If anything I said here interests you I’d highly recommend you check out The Ultimate Alpha Collection which is a compilation of 16 of my books for the price of 5.
