Virtual reality is a relatively new experience for humanity as a whole and as such there are many aspects of it that are poorly understood. There are threats that have not yet been perceived as threats and outcomes that have yet to completely come to fruition. And while the internet and all that has come with it including advances in technology can be a very good thing there is also a much darker side to it that fails to be addressed.
And understandably so. We live in a technological society that heralds technology as its god in many ways. Technology is seen as the panacea to all problems and with enough technological advancement humanity will reach its next evolution. Despite all the evidence to the contrary. Something that isn’t addressed is virtual realities’ and the internet’s threat to your masculinity as well as masculinity as a whole.
Before we go further let me get a few definitions out of the way. There are some main things I’m talking about here when I talk about virtual reality and virtual reality worlds things like social media, porn, and even video games being the predominant things. Things that plug you into a fake world and take you away from the real world. Again social media (whether it’s Instagram, online dating, facebook, YouTube, or anything else doesn’t matter, using a broad category here), porn, or many video games.
Technology Vs. Masculinity
It’s not secret that over the past decade or so masculinity has been on the decline. Males are getting weaker and less masculine by the day. There have been many “experts” who are quick to point out the cause on on side (usually wrong) and then on the other side to say that this is a good thing (also wrong). Something that goes unaddressed is technology’s effect on masculinity.
Masculinity is built through struggle, hardship, and overcoming adversity in a measured state (for example grueling training not senseless abuse). The entire purpose of technology is to make our lives easier (and I’m all the happier for it). However there comes a point where technology starts to have a deleterious effect on the males of a society that develops it greatly. Such as the modern Western world.
But it’s about more than just ease. Technology has also in many ways poisoned the earth and the foods that we eat causing somewhat “toxic” environments (from the womb of mothers to the fields you grow you food on) that have a negative effect of not just masculinity but humanity as a whole that also has a role to play in this. This combination has been disastrous for masculinity.
Virtual World Vs. Real World
But there’s more to it than just that. These virtual worlds are so popular for a reason they’re easy and addictive. Facebook replaces going camping with friends, porn replaces going on dates, and video games replace overcoming real challenges in your life and leveling up yourself. This isn’t to say that social media cannot be used properly for business or that all video games are bad all the time but simply that when a fake world starts to overtake the real world you have problems.
When you start to care more about the latest post on facebook more than social activities in real life you have a problem. When you’re more interested in some bimbo’s latest scene then you are the cute girl at the check out counter, you have a problem. When you’re more concerned with leveling a fake character made of pixels instead of improving yourself in the real world then you have a problem.
I’ve seen this happen to so many males and so many will deny the problem and end up with the same problems over and over again. These virtual worlds are tempting as hell because they were designed to be that way. Now I’m not saying they’re the same as crack but they work in the same way upon the same circuitry. And they can become addictive or even just bad habits that you don’t want in your life.
Live A Real Life In The Real World
The competition is really drying up out there in many ways, no matter how you look at it. In business, in dating/mating, and in many other ways. And much of this is because so many who have potential are plugged into one matrix or another and never get out. People were not meant to be in isolation for long periods of time plugged into a technological device that gives them hits of dopamine.
Life is meant to be lived out there with flesh and blood and the wind in your face. That is where masculinity, strength, character, honor, and all that other good stuff is developed and “perfected”. That is where you must go to become the man that you were created to become. Take risks and live life with a fire in your chest. Do not the cold grip of technology snuff it out as it already has to a large part of a generation.
