So last we left off we were talking about creating your own little bubble of sanity, it sort of reminded me of a post I wrote a little while ago about fire. How the world is darkness and all we can do is light our own little fires providing some light in the darkness, you can read it here. What I’m talking about here is little different, a little more specific.
We’re talking about creating your own little bubble of sanity. Not an easy task, and a task that may require more of you than you think. I’ve done it to death so I’ll only mention it in passing here but the first part of creating your own little bubble of sanity is where do you live? Do you live in the middle of crazy town? As in do you live in a major city or the affluent suburbs surrounding a city gone haywire?
Do you live in a place that’s dangerous, where the people don’t like each other. Where class, race, and other tensions seem like they’re going to boil over at any moment? If so then moving may be the absolutely best thing that you can do. We live in an age where working from home is becoming more and more viable. I’d recommend talking with your employer and seeing if a more permanent remote schedule can work for you.
I know a few guys who moved states, jumping ship from their “quickly becoming a shithole” state to literally greener pastures and just have to fly in every quarter or so to check in. There are risk involved with this of course, but corporations are never loyal either so there’s always risk involved. But might be something to think about.
But back to the bubble…
The Three Parts Of The Sanity Bubble
Before we talked about how many has three component parts to him, so to speak. Those are physical, mental, and spiritual, and we talked about how madness can possess and destroy each and every part of them. And that the world around you promotes this madness. A few examples for illustrative purposes. Body positivity. While there is something to be said for being okay with how you look, pushing obesity as the same as being a normal weight is not only dumb, its dangerous. One example of physical madness.
Let’s look at mental. Proscribing mind altering drugs to children instead of looking at underlying lifestyle factors for mental health. Just throw enough pills at them while not addressing anything else and they’ll be fine. That’s not just dumb but also dangerous. Now what about spiritual?
You live whatever way you want and your soul will be the same. Granted this one has been around awhile, especially with many sects of Christianity but its rot can be seen in the culture as a whole now. If everyone’s equal and there’s no such thing as merit then it doesn’t matter what one does. Creating a piece of art is the same thing as defecating on the sidewalk.
Maybe not the best examples and certainly not all encompassing but a good start.
Creating Your Own Sanity Bubble – Foundations
There are few things that I recommend everyone do, even if I love them personally. For example I love combat sports and it gives me something that the gym just never could and it keeps me in good shape. However while I recommend physical exercise to all it doesn’t have to be in the ring or the cage, it could be hiking, at the gym, whatever, so long as you’re physically moving. However there is one thing I recommend across the board.
And that’s reading. Not listening to audiobooks (brain picks up more actually reading), not looking at articles on a screen, but actually reading a book, preferably a paperback or hardcover one (again brain thing) but e-readers can work as long as the books are legit. You need to keep learning, searching, and expanding your mind. This is the foundation of so much.
Reading is non-negotiable, not just for creating your own sanity bubble but for living the best life possible or even just to keep yourself from getting screwed. Now you might ask what are you asking me to read Charles? And I’d say start with non-fiction, you should read fiction too, but what I’m talking about here is non-fiction.
I have book reviews on the site, I have books myself, and I have recommend reading lists, check them out if you need a place to start. But keep reading, keep learning, and keep expanding your awareness of how the world works.
Knowledge is the foundation of the sanity bubble.
Creating Your Own Sanity Bubble – Physical
Physical health has more to do than with just being a shape. It’s about more than just having muscle, a healthy body fat percentage, well functioning organs, good blood pressure, and all of that, though all that’s certainly part of it. So let’s put together many of the facets that make up physical health. The foundation is diet. I’d recommend steering away from fad diets. You want to eat more natural things, closer to nature you can get the better.
Paleo, despite technically being a “fad” is a good start for people because it’s simple and easy to remember. Also make sure to have probiotics that are good for your gut as most people’s guts have been absolutely trashed in the modern world. Next is physical activity. Everyone needs some form of physical activity, even if its just taking walks around the garden. Find out what makes you feel good and most importantly that you can do on a regular basis.
As I mentioned above I have combat sports, that’s my thing. Yours will probably be different. Just find something hiking, kayaking, boxing, weight lifting, rock climbing, whatever. Just have something you can do on a frequent basis and that you’ll stick with. The third part is what I’ll call outdoor time.
Man was meant to be in nature. He was meant to breath fresh air and have the sun beating down on him. He was made to feel the wind in his hair. To feel the chill of winter, the heat of summer. To see the color of fall and the new life of spring. You need to spend time taking in nature, it’s relaxing, it’s good for your mental health, and it’ll help your functioning overall.
The fourth thing is stress reduction. Make sure you’re getting good sleep. Keep your room cool, your bed comfortable, and cut out all lights. Take time to meditate, this could be clearing your mind and focusing, it could be taking a walk in nature (ties into what we talked about above), or simply journal. Take time to be at peace and be quiet. Your body will thank you for it.
The Beginning Of Sanity
This is just the start of creating your sanity bubble we still have mental and spiritual to cover next. I should also note that these are no guarantee of sanity they just work to help facilitate it. Provide the good soil for sanity to grow and flourish. But there are plenty of other factors that could destroy it. Everyone is unique and will therefore have a unique situation.
I can only provide you the broad basics and then you take it from there. However the broad basics are the 20% that will get you 80% of results when it comes to successfully creating a sanity bubble. I hope this has given you some things to think about and I look forward to diving deeper into the subject with you in the next installment.
Until then.
