How To Find An Affordable Place To Live

I think right now there are two things that the average person living in the Western world should do. Well one thing but if you can’t do that one thing then two things. The first thing would be look to get out of the Western world. If you like in Australia, the United Kingdom, the States, New Zealand, Ireland, Germany, France, Nordic countries, etc. then you may want to look to finding a more sustainable place to live.

A place where a person can work, without being a CEO, and earn a decent income that also supports families and family living. There are still places like this in the world and if possible it’s always wise to at least visit other places and look into jobs or skill sets that can set you up in those other locations while the West falls down the black hole it’s opened up for itself.

However leaving isn’t going to be an option for everyone. So what do you do if you’re stuck? And say you want normal things like a relatively moderate stress life with a family, as low stress doesn’t seem to be a thing anymore. A decent home, some disposable income, a safe place to raise your family, and things of that nature.

Things that many people took for granted for many years, things that were seen as “common” that are now essentially becoming luxury items. Even a house is a luxury item anymore. So what two things should you be doing for this?

The first is to find ways to make more money. You need to skill up. Learn sales of course, but we’ve been over that. Also learn how corporations work, learn what jobs pay and what skills pay. You don’t necessarily need to go to school to get a good job. If you know how top write a good resume and how to interview, as well as how to negotiate your salary, then you can get started at a decent job and then work your way up there.

No need for a business degree or degree from Harvard. If you already have a degree, then great, but if not don’t go there thinking it’ll automatically translate into a better job. Better to nail down your resume writing skills, interviewing skills, and salary negotiating skills as well as how to do an effective job search.

But those are topics for another time.

The other half of making the most money is keeping your cost of living down. And the best way to do that is to live somewhere that’s cheap, but since even houses in dangerous places are outrageous, how do you do this?

Finding Affordable Living

First and foremost, see if your government offers any assistances that you can take advantage of. Don’t feel bad about this, plenty of people take advantage of these systems who don’t deserve, someone who is working hard and trying to make something of themselves deserve it more than anyone. And understand that most Western nations are not sustainable anyways so if you’re worried about hurting the future then sorry to say but that boat sailed a long, long time ago.

Maybe there isn’t any. Okay, now let’s look at other options. We’ve talked about RV living or making a yurt/cabin/tiny home before. And while I like those things in concept, often they end up being just as expensive as other options that give you much more room and living ability. However if you have construction/contracting experience and know how to do many things then you can save yourself a lot of money and I’d say give something like that a go.

One plan that I do like is the taking it in steps plan. So you find a place that’s not horrible but not long term. Renting somewhere most likely, as cheap as you can find. This is where the making more money comes in as cheap rent is not really a thing anywhere, even in ghetto, dangerous places. So you’ll want to up your income to where rent isn’t killing you.

Then you’ll want to find cheap land. Find out how much it’d be to ruin water and electric to that land or what you can and cannot do without. Then you might want to look at prefabricated homes. They’re really not that much different than traditionally built homes but they’re a hell of a lot cheaper.

And in this way you can buy the land first, maybe use it to hunt or trap, depending, help to keep food costs down. Then look at putting a prefab or it or a trailer to start. Have electricity and water run to trailer. Then maybe prefab. Now obviously it’s best to do this right away and go straight to say a prefab home as fast as possible to save money. However say you’re going to do this over decades and with the cost of living, materials, and everything else this isn’t that far out there.

Go from land to trailer to prefab then look at having things like driveway run and the like. Or whatever works for you. Everyone is going to have different needs. Or maybe you get a trailer with hookups, have water and electric run, but get more land. Part for hunting part for raising say sheep or cattle.

There are a lot of options.

Keep Your Mind Open

Obviously this is just a general overview. A benefit of this plan is it allows you to work in steps. Acquire the land, then later acquire maybe a small house and hookups, then later put prefab there, or again keep it open to what works for you. This isn’t cheap, but if done right can keep expenses down and again gives you a longer timeframe to work from. Of course if you have the money and have it now then maybe you just want to get a house when the market evens out a little. Again just keep your mind open and you’ll find more and more options. And in today’s world you need to have your options open.
