Alright so obviously this is way too broad of a question to answer completely because it depends. I could never sit here and tell you “Oh, it’ll take 5.7 years to be a success in copywriting, 10.421 for success as a lawyer, and 7.002 for success as a small business owner.” there are just way too many factors involved, plus what success means, is different for each person.
For one person, success might be paying their rent at the end of the month, for another its travelling around the world on a yacht, for a third it might just being not have to worry about money while living a decent, but not luxurious life. I know for me success is closer to the third guy than anyone but that changes from person to person. So again it makes it impossible to give a very accurate answer.
But if it’s so hard to give an accurate answer then why am I bringing it up at all? Why even talk about the subject? Well just because I can’t give you an exact timespan there are certain principles that I can lay out that’ll make a huge difference for you and how you go about working towards success and give you a somewhat realistic look at what it actually takes. All while helping to define what success itself is.
No Matter What Success Is A Marathon Not A Sprint
No matter what success is something that takes time, a long time. It’s not something that you do in a week, at least not for anything meaningful. There’s no such thing as an “overnight success” it’s funny because whenever you study these “overnight” successes it all turns out they’ve put in decades of work. Whether it’s a one hit wonder, a successful business, a best selling novel, or whatever else all of these “overnight” successes have put in the time and work to get there.
For example when someone sells their very first novel to a publisher and it becomes a bestseller I can pretty much guarantee that they have at least 1,000,000 failed words of fiction writing under their belt. It might be their first novel, that they sold to a publisher but it’s not the first fiction words that they have written, that much I can guarantee. That’s not how humans work. We require time and effort to get anywhere and that’s even with natural talent.
There’s no getting around putting the time and effort in. No way around it. You’re just going to waste your time trying to find another way around. Don’t get me wrong you can work harder and work smarter and cut down on that time, somewhat but there are no shortcuts in the way we traditionally think of shortcuts. You have to put in the work. You have to put in the time. And you have to put in the effort.
No exceptions.
One Thing I Can Guarantee About Success
However with all these variables and different definitions there is one thing that I can guarantee about success and that is that it’s going to take longer than you think and it’s going to take more effort than you think. Most people when they reach success, when they look back on their journey they, they think or say that they never knew how hard or how much effort it would require in the beginning.
And a good number of them wouldn’t have started if they would have known. But that’s more for world class stuff, again success means different things to different people. However just be prepared for it to take longer than you think and require more effort than you think. And understand that everyone’s different and we all have strengths and weaknesses.
So if you want to be a success in a given field you’d better buckle down for the long haul. You better be ready to immerse yourself in the subject and stay immersed. Because you have a long road ahead of you. However its by travelling the road that you develop the skills and fortitude required to achieve success. And that is ultimately worth it.
