Places, like people, are not all created equal. And depending on what one wants from life one place could drive one crazy while another place could be fit like a hand to a glove (or whatever). Being location independent I’ve been able to travel a bit and see quite a few different places and the cultures that are predominant in those places. I’ve met people who were miserable where they were at and I thought would be perfect for somewhere else I’d been.
And vice versa. I’ve been in places where I felt I was slowly going mad and often made me doubt if there was any good in the world. Then I’ve also been places where I couldn’t believe how well things fit. It was like this place was created for my soul and I was around my people. And then I’ve been places that are somewhere in-between. And this has changed at different points in my life and depending on what I was wanting.
What I want to make clear to you today is the grand importance of geography and where you live (well more about the cultures in different geographies than the geography itself). Look different people like different things and are going to fit in different places. And I’m not talking about the dumb small town girl wanting to make it “big” in the city of other foolishness or naivety but true facts.
Being Location Independent
But before we go on to that I want to talk a bit about location independence. While the vast majority of people aren’t going to be able to write a blog, but an RV, and travel the world in it there are still many things that can be done to help one become more location independent and then free. Because in the modern world this is going to become more and more important. Things are changing more and more rapidly and friction is increasing.
You may find the place you once called home is no longer safe to be. You may find the friendly corporation you work for decides to fire you and leave you with no recourse. You may find that you can’t take one more second of where you’re at and instead of slowly going mad want to do something about it. Now obviously this subject could take books (and many good ones have been written) but I’ll lay out two things.
The first off is that debt (in 99% of cases) is essentially and evil and something you want to be careful of ever acquiring. Beware college, beware buying a house, beware buying an expensive car, and so on and so forth. Try to live as lean as possible. Not exactly a breakthrough statement but one that pretty much all know but few follow. Second I’d recommend something like copywriting to start bringing in a side income. 30 minutes of copywriting work a day can make you more than any other side job that takes 10x the time.
Geography & Culture
While it is nice to visit different places and get tastes (key word tastes) of different cultures at the end of the day there is generally going to be certain people and cultures that one wants to be around. People that are like them and have the same beliefs and overall life patterns as them to some extent. Take a guy from East Texas and place him in San Francisco and he may very well go crazy and vice versa. Again good to get tastes of other cultures but ultimately one wants their own.
Different places suit different people at different times in their life. Do you want to bang lots of varied girls and work a high paying job? Then living in Corntown, Iowa is not going to be the best place for you (most likely) moving to a major city is going to be much more productive. Do you want to start a family and raise children? Then Corntown, Iowa is going to be a hundred times better than say L.A. or New York or really any major city.
And depending on where you are in life the place you are may very well never give you what you want (or make it extremely difficult to get what you want). And this is something that it pays to think about. For your own health, wellbeing, and sanity. Don’t get me wrong you should always make the best out of any situation that you’re in. And never use geography as an excuse for personal failings. But at the same time pay heed to it.
Always Make The Best Of It
No matter where you are for good things in life you’re going to have to work hard and be smart. That’s just a given, no matter where you are or what you want. And don’t use geography as an excuse for not working on yourself or not getting what you want. A fat, dumb, dork isn’t going to do well in Corntown or L.A. and that’s just a fact.
But at the same time geography (well culture) makes a huge difference. It’s two parts of a whole (obviously more complicated than that but for our purposes here two halves of a whole). So in addition to working on yourself everyday and working hard and working smart. Also give a mind to geography and culture and what is going to be best for you. And visit places, sure you can’t get an accurate idea of a place in a week but you can understand things somewhat better. Travel is good for a man.
If anything I said here interests you I’d highly recommend you check out The Ultimate Alpha Collection which is a compilation of 16 of my books for the price of 5.
