Once upon a time a man’s culture shaped and spurred him on to be the greatest that he could be. As a young boy he would be told of great heroes and warriors of old and how they brought about great times for his respective tribe, nation, or race. Entering puberty he would soon be tested and begin to learn the ways of man. He would be tried and put through the fire to come out steel, all the while he would be imparted with the wisdom of the elders.
Then it would be his time to go out and make his mark on the world. To win glory and honor among other things. First his parents and the culture around him would bid him to fly high, then it would be his peer group, and then the reliance of others upon him. And if he was particularly strong it would be himself. However those days are long behind us, just as much a fairy tale as great floods or slaying dragons. Something lost to ages past.
Creating Your Own Culture
I know many people wish to change the world or at least their part of the world. To bring about a great reawakening and change the rot that has grown so thoroughly throughout the western world and beyond. However for the most part I think this is a fool’s errand or at least in the way which most go about trying to accomplish it. No matter how many pamphlets or marches are done that won’t change anything.
Though often used as a cheesy and trite saying if you want to change the world you must start with yourself rings true. You must first create your own culture of excellence and create an example of yourself that may inspire others. You must hold yourself to the great standard that your culture will not. You must create a culture of excellence that builds you up and challenges you each and every day.
You must strive physically, mentally, and spiritually. Weakness is any facet is still weakness and should be eliminated. This doesn’t mean to become a robot of course, we were created human for a reason. This simply means to become to great human that you can. And not in the modern moral sense which means neutering yourself completely. Genghis Khan was a great man as was Alexander the Great.
The Spartan Existance
Spartan has unfortunately become some tool to sell lame e-books to confused kids and make pampered yuppies feel tough for rolling through the mud between frappuccino. But this is not what I mean by the word. I wanted something to describe this excellence as opposed to corporate/modern excellence. Which means being an effective drone. This means excellence in the human/Nietzschian form. The uberman.
And not in some lame philosophical only way, but in a real way. Excellence is something you achieve by chasing perfection as a wise man once said. Remember this is something that is physical, mental, and spiritual. But again do not become a robot remember to laugh, love, breathe, and be human. The more spiritually well you become the easier that this is.
Be tough for the bad times but also enjoy the good times. Remember that between great hunts and battles there were also great feasts and celebrations. Start thinking about the things that’ll encompass your culture of excellence. Start by thinking about one physical practice, one mental practice, one spiritual practice, and one together practice you can do to help bring about this culture.
A together practice is something you do with those close to you. It can be anything from cookouts to working on a project together to anything else. It can be something done with your father/brothers/cousins or friends. Just something to facilitate bonding. Try to feel more alive and in tuned with the world around you. Not in a hippy-dippy way (again they’ve poisoned something very powerful) but in a real way.
That is the path to greatness.
