What about three days? It’s an interesting question but one that I think every man should ask himself at some point. Could you survive a week in the woods with the most basic of equipment? How are your survival skills? Do you have any at all or are they non-existent. Do you know the basics of surviving in the world that you forefathers conquered or are you completely clueless when it comes to the matter?
I’ve talked a lot about developing different skills in my writing. From things like sales and copywriting to fighting and proper nutrition and whole lot more. Yet one thing that’s critically important to being a man is understanding how to survive in this world. And not just survive as in how to collect a paycheck and buy things others provide for you. But how to provide yourself.
Could you even last a day in the wilderness? Could you brave the elements, the many threats, and the animals of such a place without coming to serious harm? Do you know enough of bushcraft and survival skills to make it? If not it might be time to start thinking about such things as like fighting, even if one never uses them they’re still an important part of being a man.
Surviving The Harsh World
For millions of years man has had to brave and survive the harsh wilderness it was only recently that the average man could get by without learning such skills and if anything they were said to antiquated and out of date. Who needs to learn how to build a fire or skin a buck when we have indoor heating and grocery stores? And while an argument can be made for that (in one sense) there is much that they are missing.
When you couldn’t survive a day outside your city apartment or suburb home it does something to your soul. You not only tie yourself down but you miss out on a crucial development of a man’s soul in neglecting these skills and parts of yourself. Like I said above sort of like fighting. Yeah you’ll probably never get in a fight in your life but knowing how to handle yourself if you did is still crucial to becoming a healthy fully developed man.
Nature and men are meant for each other and when man doesn’t spend time in nature or seek to understand parts of it then man misses out on a part of himself and the development of his soul. We all know how a walk in the woods can be refreshing for the mind, body, and spirit but imagine how much more so more time spent in nature would do for you. Yet if you can’t hack it how will you ever know?
Man Is Meant For Nature
My suggestion to you is brush up on your survival and bushcraft skills. You don’t have to be able to survive the Australian outback with a knife and a piece of string but you should have the basics down. Can you treat a basic wound? Build a fire? Hunt, clean, and cook game? Build the most rudimentary of shelters? Know the basics dos and don’ts of survival and bushcraft?
If not then get started. You don’t have to become a boyscout but you can start learning the basics easily. YouTube, books, and guides are more than happy to help. Start small and work your way up from there. Maybe start with some basic tent camping next to an area with all the medical and other supplies that you’ll need and build up from there. Don’t stop by getting on a boat headed for the artic.
Start small and build up, just like you would with anything else. Crawl before you walk and walk before you run. Spend a night outside with a sleeping bag, just start somewhere and then start working your way up. They have classes most places that’ll teach you the very basics of such things. Or learn them separately. Start a fire at a camp the old fashioned way, go on a hunt and gut and clean your kill, and so on and so forth.
The Rich Bounty Of Nature
I really can’t put into words how rewarding nature and time spent in it is. For the mind, the body, and the spirit there isn’t a replacement. When you don’t have these skills you’re disconnected from a great and powerful source. There will be a part of your soul that cries out for something that you won’t be able to fulfill. Like I said this goes beyond just having basic skills in case of a SHTF type of situation.
It’s needed for the soul as well. So like I said you don’t have to become “Mr. Survival Expert” or anything of the sort. Just learn the basics skills and be able to last a week in the woods without suffering some horrible death. This won’t take years to learn just some basic stuff will go a long way when you first start learning something. Could you survive a week with basic equipment? If not then maybe time to start learning so you could.
