Now by homeschool I don’t mean that they don’t go to public school and that you stay at home with them and teach them every day. Though there’s nothing wrong with that if time and money permit. And something that I’ve thought of talking about at some point in time, something with pros and cons that should be discussed. But that’s not what this article is about. This article is about learning and how it works. Even if you don’t have kids and/or plan on never having kids this article will still have relevant information for you.
First off we need to talk about the nature of learning and how it works. Modern schooling was created and funded to indoctrinate kids to be good workers bees, nothing and nothing less. It was created to give them a certain sense of the world so they won’t be a problem and will do whatever job they’re assigned without question and without resistance. They’ll be taught warped versions of history, mathematics, science, art, language, and more. Most kids could teach themselves better with books than going to school.
And I say this as a former teacher, not someone who is rapidly against public schooling. But a spade is a spade and to call it anything else would be a lie. Schooling isn’t for learning, becoming smart, making money, becoming a well-adjusted person, or getting a job. It’s for indoctrination and babysitting, nothing more and nothing less. If you think the government would provide you with something for free without getting the better end of the bargain you’re crazy. That’s not how they work, highways might be the only exception.
The Dangers Of Outsourcing
If you want to learn something then you need to understand that school means very little. I’m talking all forms of school from general education to university to getting job certificates and more. If you want to learn then you need to be a self-learner yourself. Don’t rely on others to tell you the truth about things and tell you how things work. Like the old saying goes if you want something done right then you have to do it yourself. Obviously there are some exceptions.
For example I might be handy but if I’m doing an add-on to my house I’ll have professionals at least check it out or even if I can do basic repairs on the car there are things where it just needs to go to the shop to get fixed. And so on and so forth. However learning isn’t something that can be farmed out. Sure teachers, instructors, and the like are great but they’re resources not the end all be all. And just because you took a class on a subject or even majored in it doesn’t mean you know anything about it. Though technical classes can be exceptions.
But still you have learn yourself and seek out knowledge yourself. Books, videos, lectures, hands on experience, and anything else that you can use to your advantage. Real learning is self-learning. Now if you have do have kids the best thing you can do to get them to be self-learners is be a self-learner yourself. Kids follow your examples over your words. And even if you never want kids you still have to homeschool yourself. It’s the only way to learn anything. You can’t farm out the most important things. Teachers aren’t going to teach your kids and they aren’t going to teach you.
You have to figure things out for yourself, teachers are a jumping off at point, at best.
An Environment Of Learning
Create an environment of learning in your home. It’s crazy how few people have libraries anymore. And these same people are surprised when their kids don’t want to read. They’ll say things like “Wasn’t school supposed to teach them that?” which is ridiculous. The only thing school teaches is what’s good for whatever government that pays for the schooling, nothing more and nothing less. They’re not concerned with creating intelligent or knowledgeable students. If anything that’d be a threat.
They want smart enough to be productive but dumb enough to not question anything. That’s what schools want and what they create. Your home should be many things and a place of learning is one of them. Where the real learning occurs, well that and general life experience. But even then the more wisdom and knowledge you can instill in the home the better off both you and your children will be. Like everything else in life, it starts with you. Be a self-learner yourself, create and environment of learning.
And your children will be much more likely to follow along that path. Acta non verba always. Meaning deeds not words or your actions speak louder than your words. You want to learn anything in life. I don’t care if it’s how world government works to how to make a damn good steak you’re going to have to learn it yourself. Dig in yourself, sort things out yourself, others can help but they can’t do it for you. You have to be a self-learner.
Self-Learning Is The Only True Learning
In a way, aside from survival type stuff, but that’s beyond the scope of this article. You need to be a self-learner and if you want your kids to have the best chance of truly succeeding in this life then they need to be self-learners as well. Books, videos, lectures, hands on learning, and all of that. Teachers, at best, are jumping off points. Nothing more and nothing less. Teach yourself and teach your kids to teach themselves, while providing guidance and the right environment along the way.
