So last week we covered the importance of goals, how you have to make them “SMART” goals and we covered the basics of the system to accomplish all your goals and live the life you want. In that article I said that I was going to go over the two other parts today. But I don’t know if that’s true or not. Because we have another big thing to cover that relates to goals. And that is.
The Ultimate Goal Setting System
But seriously, I want to go over with you a simple system for setting up goals in a systematic manner that gets real results, when followed consistently.
So let’s talk about it.
Last week we talked about the different kinds of goals, beyond being SMART. And for a quick refresher SMART goals refers to goals that are…
Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Relevant
Time Bound
But we also referred to different timed or sized goals.
Large goals, medium goals, small goals, and daily goals.
Each has a place in the system and each will help you to accomplish all that you want to accomplish and give you the best chance of living the life that you want.
The Ultimate Goal Setting System…For Real
So you start with your SMART long term goal. Which is a goal that you measure in years. Meaning a goal that’ll take a year or so to accomplish. Or at least could. As a quick example let’s say that today was your first day training MMA, you love it and in a year’s time you want to have and win your first fight. A relatively realistic goal. But let’s make it smart.
So for your large goal (year or more goal) you write.
“Win my first amateur MMA match by October 9, 2024”
A decently SMART goal.
So once you have your large goal the next thing to do is break that down into monthly goals. Which are roughly month long goals or goals measured in months. You could plot them out month by month writing down what you need to do as well as write down what you want to accomplish each month. As a short example part of the medium goals for our new MMA fighter might be.
January – Have a consistent weight within 10 lbs of weight class.
February – Have been to at least one amateur fight
Or another example.
October, 2023 Monthly
- Hit 20 training sessions
- Lose five pounds
- Have 4 private lessons
- Watch at least 10 matches
- Run 5 days a week
And so on and so forth.
Then we break it down even further into small goals or goals accomplished by the week. Generally these are written out week by week while the others (large and medium goals).
So for the example above with the month of October.
Week of 16
- Get to class 4 times
- Run 5 times
- Eat healthy breakfast
- Get 8 hours sleep each night
And then you’d have check marks or something next to each to keep track of…or you could do another way.
Which brings us to daily goals. Daily goals are essentially anything that you need to do today to move you towards your goal.
For the above an example would be.
- Go to striking
- Eat my eggs and bacon
- Go for a run in the AM
- Go to bed by 10
And you’d check off for each one that you did. I recommend writing these out the night before that way your subconscious has time to process and look over things, but if your forget then no big deal. Just write them out anyways.
Summarizing The Goal Setting System
So to break it down.
You have.
Large goals measured in year(s).
Medium goals measured in month(s).
Small goals measured in week(s).
And daily goals measured by the day.
So if a large goal is eating an elephant.
Medium goals are dividing the elephant into four quadrants.
Small goals are dividing those quadrants in quadrants.
And daily goals are eating whatever amount of the quadrant you have to each and every day.
And keeping track.
It’s a lot of writing.
And it’s a lot of tracking.
But it’s the best way I know to accomplish your goals or at least accomplish great things and move your life in the right direction in a rapid way.
The Rest Of Success
But of course there is more to success then just goals. I said we’d cover the two others things today but we’re running out of space. So next week we’re actually going to dive into the two other things for accomplishing your goals and living the life that you want. Things that you cannot do without to live the good life.
See You Then,
