Members Only Posts #135 – MMA For Mental Health?

If you look at the statistics on mental health, at least for the Western world you can quickly see the ways that things are trending. People are becoming less and less mentally healthy and you can see this in how society “functions”. Now granted some of this is based on the definition of “mental health” and the money that is to be made by giving every one you can a pill of one sort or another.

Yet at the same time I’d say that mental health is becoming a bigger and bigger…crisis, for lack of a better word for the Western world. I think the modern world and its pressures are essentially designed to make the average person insane. We live in a way that is completely counter to our nature as humans and we wonder why we so often end up broken physically, mentally, and spiritually because of it.

Sort of like putting a fish on dry land and wondering why it struggles, it’s no different for us. When we violate the primal/cosmic laws, AKA when we violate how reality works bad things happen. And no amount of mind altering pharmaceuticals that keep a few individuals rich is going to change that.

Now let me state that I am not a doctor and this is not medical advice but rather some things have helped me and worked for others that I know. It is my opinion, nothing less and nothing more.

The Cost Of Mental Health

I’m not talking in dollars and cents. We have a weird way of thinking in the Western world where everything had to be measured in money. For example is the GDP goes up year to year then the country is good, regardless of what else is happening in it. By that logic shouldn’t you give your kids up for adoption because it’ll save you money? Shouldn’t you pimp your wife out because it’ll earn more $$$ than being a stay at home mom?

I’m getting a bit of track here but you get the point. Anyways when I talk about the cost of mental health I’m talking about the damage to society yes, but also to the relationships that make up that society as well as total life happiness. We have many different things that assault mental health today from the general ways of living, to the news and media, to the hardcore drugs that are pushed on society by both pushers of the illegal and legal sort. And a great many other things.

We live in a world gone mad and if you don’t realize that then I’d strongly suggest you start paying attention. We live counter to nature and because we are part of nature we break apart because of it. I don’t mean that in a hippy-dippy way but simply as a statement of fact. There are certain ways we need to live and ways in which we need to do it.

Moving Towards Mental Health

Again, I’m am not a doctor and this is not medical advice. When you look at what we call “healthcare” you would assume that it was about making people healthy, right? But that’s a lie “healthcare” is about making money, and if by making you healthy it makes them money then it’ll be done. But if by making you unhealthy or dependent they’ll make more money, that’ll be done too.

I’m not saying don’t trust doctors, I’m saying try to understand things yourself as well. Try to understand how the mind works and the things that you can do to help your mind heal or stay healthy. Understand the importance of things like meditation, time in nature, physical activity, sunlight, spending time with loved ones, good uplifting music, and so on and so forth. You cannot live without these things and a dangerous drug isn’t going to change that.

Diet and sleep also play a big role in health physically, mentally, and spiritually. For me something that’s worked wonders to keep things smooth is time spent in nature. Going for walks, swimming in the ocean, getting out in the swamps, whatever. Just time spent in nature with breathing the fresh air, getting the sun or moon on me, and just living with the natural rhythms.

Natural Living & Mental Health

The closer you can get to natural ways of living the better your mental is going to be. I’m not saying ignore your doctor I’m not saying you don’t need other things. What I’m saying is that general health things can only help. MMA was a big one for me. The physical activity and the mental aspects of it really help me stay level and cool with all the pressures of the modern world.

A modern world that I work day and night to…well I was going to say “escape from” but I don’t think that’s the most accurate term. Rather I work day and night to “mitigate as much of the modern world as feasible” so that I can live the best quality of life possible and find a safe place to watch the fireworks when it all comes tumbling down.

But that’s me, find what works for you.
