I don’t really like the term “alpha” there’s too much cheesy marketing and baggage around it. However at the same time I think most people have at least a basic understanding of what is meant by this term. Essentially a male who is “alpha” is stronger, tougher, more dominant, and “better” then a male who is “beta”, beta representing weakness, cowardice, sickliness, and the like. In broad terms, obviously we can get a lot more nuanced than that but that’s the basics.
I think in popular culture as well as in real life one thing that gets associated the most with alphaness is athleticism and this makes sense. After all if we really want to get down to it an “alpha” is a guy who is successful in the biological, as opposed to the more or sociological, sense. So a guy who dies in a shootout with the cops but leaves behind twelve children by seven women is “alpha” even though he isn’t good morally or societal wise, he is still “good” biologically wise.
What I’m getting at is that “alphaness” is essentially how “biologically successful” that one is, regardless of morality. Obviously I’m not saying “being alpha” is all there is to life, man must have a moral component too I’m just trying to break down terms. So anything that would make you better at procreating and surviving in the violence chaotic world of our past makes you more alpha. Hence charity work isn’t “alpha” but having a proclivity for violence is. Alpha isn’t a moral term.
Alphaness & Physicality
So it makes sense that one of the most important parts of survival in a world where the predators’ are fast, enemies plenty, and survival never guaranteed that having mastery over your body and signs that you would not be fun to fight are going to add to your alphaness. Hence physicality, being in good physical shape being incredibly important to being alpha. Not saying its the only way but when we look at it honestly, its pretty essential.
But let’s move on.
Way That Sports Make You More Alpha #1 – Physical Development
So this kind of ties into what we were just talking about. Physicality is essential to survival to being able to fight off threats and protect those that are more vulnerable from threats. A fat or skinny and weak man with poor hormones is not only going to be bad at fending of predators but also lack the will to so. Sports, good sports at least, develop strength, cardio, hand eye coordination, muscularity, and a great many other physical attributes that make you more fit in the Darwinian sense.
Which is what alphaness is all about. With sports you’ll lose fat, gain muscle, and become better coordinated at a minimum all facets which are important to survival in the harsh world of our forefathers. Those who could run fast, throw hard, and in general survive are those that passed on their genes and those that were sought out for those genes by women. And still are. Our basic primary drives haven’t changed even if the society around us and world around us has changed. We’re still cave men and women inside.
Way That Sports Make You More Alpha #2 – Hormonal Changes
What is masculinity? Why is it that some girls get turned out by certain men’s sweat? Why is it some males will naturally be more dominant in social situations? Well the answer to all three of the above is hormones, in particular testosterone. Testosterone is essentially masculinity and when you lack testosterone or its not functioning properly then you’re going to have trouble being masculine, end of story. Getting hormones and testosterone right is essential to being masculine and therefore being “alpha”.
Sports help to bring your hormones into line and balanced. Exercise helps boost testosterone and keep your hormonal levels and overall profile healthy. We were meant to be in motion, we were meant to be running, jumping, punching, grappling, struggling, and coordinating our movements. When we don’t do this, things start to go wrong in the body. When we do, do this things start go right, hormonally is just one of them. But its one of the most important ones.
Way That Sports Make You More Alpha #3 – Iron Sharpens Iron
No matter what sport you do, you can’t do it alone, you have to be part of others and be part of a team. Even in individual sports like wrestling or MMA you still train with others. And because of this you have others that are holding you accountable and holding you to a higher level. At least in male sports. You have a team that expects something of you and expects you to perform to the best of your abilities. Iron sharpening iron. You become better because others push you and shame you if you don’t try your best.
So you grow and become more than you would have otherwise. You don’t allow room for slack and weakness in your life which is again “alpha”. Your become a more “polished” man, a stronger, sharper, and tougher man, a man that’s more “alpha”. Men were meant to live in tribes where they held each other accountable and pushed each other to become more. Sports are one of the rare ways in the modern world where you can still have this.
What Sport Do You Do?
More and more I think less and less of the gym. Don’t get me wrong lifting weights is 100x better than doing nothing I just think the human body is better expressed other ways aside from picking things up and putting them down. I understand it can be hard to find sport leagues outside of high school, making the gym popular. But I would say look for a sport to try out. Maybe there’s a local rugby league or something. Whatever works for you.
Just make sure that your body is in motion and your pushing yourself so you can reap all the benefits above, but more than that for your health and wellbeing. As I’ve said multiple times we were meant to be in motion and be moving. And when we’re not bad things start to happen to us and our bodies.
So do a sport, if not for the “alphaness”, then for your own wellbeing.
