I’ve heard a lot about learning languages and most of it is either geared towards business or meeting girls and while whatever reason gets you to learn a language is a good one, I think that this is limiting to think that these are the only two reasons that a man should learn a second language. Matter of fact I think that every man should learn a second language.
Let’s take a second to talk about the two most popular reasons for learning a second language. Job and women. I’m not saying either one is a bad reason by any means. But let’s address them. First off learning a second language can certainly expand your career options. Not only can it make you more valuable in your own company. For example if they have centers world wide or if there are many customers that speak another language.
But it also opens up another world of job opportunities. Just by learning a second language you can essentially double or triple the jobs that are available to you, depending on the language. It opens many doors that would otherwise be closed to you. Same with dating. It can double your dating market when you speak another language.
Not to mention being bilingual impresses many women and if you go to another country and women can tell your foreign it does two things in your favor. First off it shows adventurous and boldness. Many men think women prefer foreigners just because they’re foreign but in most cases this isn’t true, rather its the boldness of traveling to another country.
Then again there are girls that’ll self-select for foreigners which will make you more popular with certain groups. Of course if you have trouble getting girls at wherever your home is, moving to another country isn’t the solution. Working on yourself is. But with all that being said here are other reasons to learn another language.
Little Known Reason Men Should Learn A Second Language #1 – Moving Options
The world is rapidly changing and in order to survive you have to work at becoming as mobile as possible. Old powerhouses are falling to the dirt. Dangerous places are becoming safe and safe places dangerous. Wars are on the horizon then gone. So much is changing so fast. You have to be able to move with the pace of the world to stay safe and stay ahead of the curve. Not to mention its nice to see what’s out there in the world and there be another place out there that fits you better.
Getting out of your backyard generally has one of two reactions, both good. One it can show you just how good where you are is or two it can show you how much better another way of living might be. Learning a second language gives you access to a whole other part of the world. It opens door for living and prospering that would never have opened before. It gives you options and in this day and time options are some of the most valuable things you can have.
Figure out where if you had to move to another country, where would it be? Say your country went to hell, where would you go? Let’s say you have to make it another country or place that doesn’t speak the language you speak. Where would it be? What is the predominant language spoken there? Pick that language and learn it. I’ve been learning a ton just using drive time from the gym, grocer, or anywhere else to learn a second language and its worked wonders.
Little Known Reason Men Should Learn A Second Language #2 – Brain Health
The more you learn the healthier your brain is. You should always be learning, when you’re not your stagnating and that’s something you can ill afford in the fast pace of the modern world. If you want a challenge to help keep yourself sharp while also learning a valuable skill then learning a second language is about the best thing that you can do. It develops new learning pathways and helps to keep your brain sharp.
Across the board learning a second language increases cognitive functioning. Making your smarter while also having the added benefits of expanding your career options as well as dating options. This also expands your options on reading and exposing yourself to more literature and media sources. I know many people who get out of the bubble of Western media are surprised at the many varied beliefs and ways of looking at things.
And there’s nothing like reading a work of literature in its original language. Translations rarely do justice to the work and always come with certain issues. By learning to read and speak a language you can expand the literature you can expose yourself to and expand your mind in the process.
Little Known Reason Men Should Learn A Second Language #3 – Cultural Exposure
I highly recommend getting out of your backyard and experiencing the culture of different places. Exposing yourself to different cultures can teach you many different things, if only how thankful you are for your own culture. But nevertheless exposing yourself to different cultures and places will help expand your mind and give you a more accurate view of how the world works and can highlight things you own particular culture does well or ways in which you think it could be improved.
It makes me laugh that Western nations are always talking about being multicultural when what the Western nations actually do is strip away all real culture, melt it down, and produce a watered down consumerist culture. The destruction of each and every culture is not multiculturalism it is a monoculture. And the West has one of the biggest monocultures there is, one that is spreading to the rest of the world.
So to expose yourself to true multiculturalism in the real sense of the world you’ll often have to learn another language and get out of your backyard. Which granted costs money and time but not necessarily as much of either as it first expected. Find a country that is relatively cheap and safe, that speaks the language your learning. Look for a second tier city in that country, which will be drastically cheaper than the main cities. And plan a small vacation there, it’s not nearly as hard as you think, aside from expense of airfare.
Learn A Second Language & Benefit
Learning a second language doesn’t have to be a big, expensive thing. I’ve been doing it through some basic podcasts while driving around and have been getting really far in a short amount of time. I’m not near fluent yet but after a few months I can have a basic conversation and that’s from listening to teaching podcasts for about fifteen minutes a day during drive time. Not a lot of effort but the rewards are well worth it, try it out for yourself and see how it goes.
