Sales 101: The Purpose of Sales

“The most important secret of salesmanship is to find out what the other fellow wants, then help him find the best way to get it”

– Clayton Hunsicker

Sales is a topic that is essential to everyone regardless of whatever business they are in. It’s been said we are all salesmen and it is the truth.

PR Problem

Salesmen have gotten a bad reputation. Through a few bad apples, the media, and the general consensus salesman are often seen as being slick, shady, and untrustworthy. Salesmen are seen as one of the worst professions and if someone succeeds in sales well then it’s just because their a crook and have no moral fiber. Where this impression of salesmen came from doesn’t matter. But it affects you and your business and not in the way you think.

Perhaps some of you are thinking “so what salesmen are crooks” or “I’m not in sales what the hell do I care?” you see both of these outlooks are going to cause your problems in life and especially in your business regardless of what that business is. If you think salesmen are crooks its going to be an issue for your learning sales and if you think you’re not in sales you’re wrong. Regardless of what you do, you are in sales. You are always selling yourself in some way, shape, or form.

The Purpose

The purpose of sales is simple and summarized very well in the quote above. The purpose of sales is to fill peoples needs. Salesmen make the world go round through the fulfilling of peoples needs, wants, and desires. The purpose of sales is to fill needs or in other words to help people. The point of being a salesman is finding people who need your product and then getting your product to them.

It’s about helping others. It’s about seeing a problem that others have and then connecting that person with a solution to their problem. It’s about improving lives. People are very reluctant to take action, very few people are action takers or self-starters. Salesmen only persuade prospects so that the prospect will benefit from it. At least that is what successful salesmen do. Salesmen help prospects help themselves. That is the ultimate goal of a salesman to get his product where it can help.

Solving Problems

What salesmen do is not shady or wrong. If anything it is the opposite. To be a good salesman you have to realize this because otherwise you’ll never be able to put your heart and soul into it. Like I’ve written about before, if you have a quality product that can help or change the lives of others then it is your job to get it into those peoples hands. To do anything else would be cruel. You wouldn’t sit and watch someone drown when you could pull them out at any time, right? So it’s no different when you keep your products from people.

For example I intend for The Primer to find its way into the hands of every male across the Western world and beyond. I hope to reach as many people as possible with my work. I do this because I know it help people, it can change peoples lives, and make them better. I do this because I believe in what I do here, because I have seen the changes in my own life and now want others to be able to have those changes take place in their own lives but at an accelerated rate.

So Remember

Sales is about helping others. It is about providing value, solving problems, and improving the lives of your fellow man. We are all salesmen regardless of what our particular business may be. It doesn’t matter who we work for or what we do, we are selling ourselves and our ideas in some way, shape, or form every day. There is nothing wrong with being a salesman. The only wrong thing would be to keep a product that can solve a problem from the person with that problem. To not be a salesman would be wrong. Don’t let the negative stereotype of who and what a salesman is and does turn you off from the profession. Because it will be essential for you success and your growth. So whenever you need a reminded of what being a salesman is all about remember Clayton Hunsicker’s quote.
