Goodness Without Strength Is Futile

Most humans are simply animals. It doesn’t matter the race, creed, religion, or geographical location this holds true. Because of this most are absolutely “immune” to things like higher ideals. They are controlled by base desires and by the carrot and the stick. The masses, far from being some noble manifestation of humanity, are more akin to pigs wallowing in mud. That’s not to say I’m some great superman, I’ve done my share of wallowing as well. Rather I’m trying to make a larger point with all of this.

High minded ideals often fail because people just aren’t that high minded. Most people are simply incapable of understand, grasping, and living the “higher” things of this world. Whether it’s morals, art, or anything else. Like I said above the vast majority of man (meaning humankind) are brute beasts, pigs in a way. And trying to get a pig to appreciate (much less compose) Mozart is a lesson in futility.

Pearls before swine in a way. But what does any of this matter for you? Why does any of it matter to you? People are pigs, lower brute beasts, what do I care? Well if you care about any high minded ideals whether honor, morality (as opposed to moralism), beauty, or anything of the “good things” then you’ll care about this. Throughout the ages wise men have been familiar with how humanity is on the base level and so have created societies in cultures that do a number of things that we’ll talk about.

Control & Create

One thing they did was create societies that either took advantage of this lowness of man for their personal gain or created societies that tempered this lower aspect of humanity and made them strive for greater things. Essentially funneling them towards a higher plain of living, sure not all made it there, but that was never the point. The point was to keep the people of that society from wallowing the mud, to give them a chance to become more than little piggies.

However this wasn’t done by nicely asking them to do it. Either society (the ones for the personal gain of those at the top or the ones that harness human nature to become more) did this through a multitude of different things. Social shame (honor as well), religions, culture, force (the biggest one), threat of expulsion, and more. Through all of these things a man’s base nature was able to be better suited to either working for those at the top or (even harder) to becoming more than he would have otherwise.

To become more than a stupid brute beast. But what does any of this have to do with you and have to do with improving your own life? Well a lot actually. We all live in communities and societies, some small and some large. And we all influence those communities and societies and those communities and societies influence us, for better or for worse. When you look around and are saddened by the lack of higher things that you see there is one big reason for this.

As Long As Goodness Is Weak It’ll Be Useless

Higher things, good things are usually associated with weakness and humanity has a innate (and accurate) hatred of weakness. A man could be the most moral and high minded man possible but if he is also weak then no one will give a damn what he says. Without the respect that strength gains, the other things don’t matter. Whenever a good man has been followed it’s either been because he lives in a low threat sheltered environment or because he has also had strength to accompany his goodness.

Even Jesus got up and whupped up on a few bankers and said he would return with a sword. Another way of putting this is you must have the barbarian virtues before worrying about the “civilized” ones. You must be a man before you can be a gentleman and all of that. To be honest I’d say that there’s no so much a lack of good moral and honorable men out there so much so as those men are futile and weak. Give them strength and a difference could be made. Get them to understand that strength is not the enemy but rather as needed as water.

You must temper your goodness with strength or it will never do you any good and as a matter of fact will only be a liability in our world. You can be good and honorable and I would argue should be but you must also be wise and strong or that goodness will not get you anywhere and may even be your undoing. Character and goodness are crucial to a complete life and a working society. Honor is needed. But those things cannot exist without strength and wisdom to protect and guide them.

Cultivate The Good Things

Most males on a base level aren’t going to have respect for you (which is different than liking you) unless they know on some level you’d give them a run for their money if they chose to come against you. Then the other things can come. We all have more respect for a guy we know could put the whupping on us if wanted. That’s just how human nature works. It’s an ugly thing but it’s what we have to work with in this world. So by all means be good but also be strong.
